Team StFYC Finishes 2nd at Pacific Life Yacht Club Challenge - by Amy Leenhouts
Pacific Life Yacht Club Challenge Update - Sunday, April 3, 2005 Good morning. The racing on Sunday for the last matches in the Pacific Life Yacht Club Challenge was as competitive as it has been all week. Winds were steady in the 12-15knot range all day, blowing primarily from the South and Southwest. Racers were sailing about as close as ever in each series, with many close calls keeping the umpires on their toes. Racers were evenly matched, and in accordance with series rules also were required to switch boats after each series. San Diego bested last year's winner, St Francis for first; Newport Harbor bested cross-town rival Balboa in very tight racing to finish a close series at third and fourth, respectively. Following is a link to a brief newspaper article in our local paper about the race. We will have a more in-depth follow-up issued later today, along with updated photos from yesterday as well. Our web site was not updated Sunday, but stay tuned and we'll have as much information as possible posted. http://www.dailypilot.com/sports/story/8479p-11631c.html

StFYC Members fight for 1st at Antigua Race Week - by Susan Ruhne
ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK The 200-boat Antigua Sailing Week ended with a bang Friday. Rain and cloud greeted the fleet but as the day wore on the clouds gave way to Caribbean sunshine. Winds moderated slightly and averaged 23 knots but 28-knot gusts were seen after the start. Big seas made it hard going for even the big boats let alone the small ones. In Big Boat Racing I, Roy E. Disney's Pyewacket took the gun today after a week of being Morning Glory's bridesmaid. Unfortunately it was too little too late and Dr. Hasso Plattner's Morning Glory took the class prize leading Pyewacket by six points at the final tally. In Big Boat II, Clay Deutsch's Swan 68 Chippewa won the class by one point over Alex Hoffmann's Swan 86, while Robert Sturgeon's Transpac 52 Rosebud won the final race and a one point Racing III victory over Nick Lykiardopulo's Kerr 55 Aera from the UK. Cayard/Trinter finish 5th at Star Worlds - by Susan Ruhne
AUDI STAR WORLDS Gaeta, Italy - A gloves-off last race of the 102-boat Star World Championships saw Freddy Loof and Anders Ekstrom of Sweden race Britons Iain Percy and Steve Mitchell down the fleet. Their eventual 27th and 28th places hurt the British pair more as they finished third overall while the Swedes added the world title to their recent European crown. - Tim Jeffery, http://tinyurl.com/2kscn Paul Cayard and Phil Trinter climbed the mountain from their dismasting in the first race to finish a very creditable fifth, three points ahead of Peter Bromby & Lee White from Bermuda. Star Worlds, Day 5, Race #3 - by Susan Ruhne
2004 Star World Championship Day 5 Races We finally got race 3 in today. We got out there at 10:00 for an 11:00 start. The wind was light and so we did not get started until about 15:00. We had a nice breeze at the start; 15 knots from 130 but that quickly dissipated. We did not have a great start but got clear air quickly and were looking very strong on the right about half way up. The wind went a bit left and 15 boats got us from that side. Then in the last 500 meter of the beat I got in the middle and their, with all the shopped up air, we dropped another ten boats. Down the run I think we just held our own. Up the second windward leg, the fleet split as there was not clearly advantageous side. Half way up that leg, it looked like Peter Bromby was winning the race easily and that we had past 10 boats. But that breeze; a left shift, disappeared and the righters came out ok. We round the top mark still about 20th and went very well down the last run and finished 15th. Mark Neelman (NED) won the race, his second and had a nice lead on the world Championship. However, he was OCS as were a number of others. There was another OCS in front of us so we moved up to 13th. Torben Grael, had a good race 3rd, I think and Bromby was up there as well. Freddy Loof was about 8th and is probably still leading the Championship. Ian Percy finished in the top four as well. I have not gone to look at the scores so I can't tell you how we are doing but it wont look decent until we get 5 races in and get to discard that last place we got for breaking the mast on Sunday. We are still one race behind schedule and I am sure they will try to get two in tomorrow so we will have an early start.if there is any wind. The forecast is not for wind. The pasta is good though. Paul Cayard

No racing today at Star Worlds - no wind - by Susan Ruhne
Racing was abandoned today(wednesday) at the Star Worlds for lack of wind. http://www.starclass.org/artman/publish/article_124.shtml
Day 3 of Star Worlds - no racing - by Susan Bjorn Ruhne
CHAOS REIGNS AT STAR WORLDS - Magnus Wheatley Wherever there's sailing there's politics and day three of the Star World's proved no exception with the international jury throwing a spanner in the works after twenty-four hours of crazy decision making, amendments and counter-amendments that very nearly threatened to kybosh the regatta. The problems all started yesterday morning at the weigh-in of USA crew George Szabo and Christian Finnsgard who after standing on the scales were informed that they were a full one pound over the permitted limit. Cue a frantic cycle around the town to shed the excess weight and the boys jumped back on the scales only to find that they were still over the limit. Furthermore the Italian crew of class chairman Riccardo Simoneschi and Marco Marenco were also found to be over the limit alongside two other competitors. Now came the first of a series of errors by the mis-managed event staff who informed Szabo and the others verbally that they were not allowed to race and that they should stay on shore. Szabo checked the sailing instructions and found that there was no provision for re-weighing during the event despite the notice of race stating in article 8.2 that there was. (In other words the two documents governing the event were at odds with each other). Quite rightly Szabo and Simoneschi protested, claiming redress for the situation on the grounds that they were told that they were not allowed to race despite no official protest by the race committee. The jury upheld the protest and then made the astounding decision that race two was to be re-sailed on Tuesday with a premise that "no boat will be scored worse for race two than the score they achieved from the race sailed on Monday!" Where they cooked that one up from, heaven only knows! Remembering that the championships are, for some, the final qualifying event for the Olympic Games a series of counter protest threats emerged and the committee were forced into a lengthy jury session to decide how on earth to dig themselves out of the situation remaining fair to the aggrieved Szabo and Simoneschi whilst upholding their earlier decision. As the day rolled into afternoon the postponement flag still flew from the Base Nautico until a decision was taken at 2.30pm to can the day as the crews scattered around the town, confused, ill-informed and frustrated at the sheer ineptitude of the organising authorities. In a final statement the committee owned up to their failings and reopened the redress hearing to dig themselves out of the royal mess that they'd created. In doing so they found that their first decision was "not the fairest arrangement possible as required by RRS 64.2 and reopened the hearing as provided by RRS 66". The result (which should have happened in the first place) was that race two would not be re-sailed. The overweight crews would receive average points over th

Morning Glory & Pyewacket in Antigua - by Susan Bjorn Ruhne
In the first race of the Antigua Sailing Week, the BIG BIG BIG Boat class found the MaxZ86 Morning Glory finishing just 10 seconds ahead of MaxZ86 Pyewacket. The two speedsters finished just 7 minutes behind the Mari Cha IV. Check http://sailingweek.com/asw2004/day1_divA.html for more results.
Star Worlds - Cayard breaks rig - by Susan Bjorn Ruhne
Percy & Mitchell storm the first Race - Cayard out with rig failure The gloves came off for the first race of the 2004 Star World Championships in Gaeta, Italy with Skandia sponsored Iain Percy and Stevie Mitchell scoring an opening race win in challenging conditions. After an interminable delay by the race committee who were unable to set a course as the wind banged around the Aurunci mountain range, fluctuating, dying and then steadily rising to a heady peak of 26 knots, racing got underway after an obligatory general recall late in the afternoon. Very quickly it became obvious that the guys who had done their homework on the venue were always going to be the ones to beat as the fleet split with a gaggle of Gold Star ex-world champions opting for the pin end of the line and a long starboard leg inshore. By the top mark, after a no-brainer beat it was the usual suspects up in the hunt with Ireland%u2019s Mark Mansfield rounding just ahead of Sweden%u2019s Freddy Loof whilst veteran Mark Reynolds put on a late charge in the final quarter to round in third. Reynolds was to find out later that he was OCS alongside Xavier Rohart and Paul Cayard and the Americans fell away as the pressure came on. Team Percy/Mitchell were disappointed to round fifth having led the fleet half way up the first beat but their downwind speed (where many think they are untouchable) was their get out of jail free card in the 118 strong fleet. As the afternoon rolled into evening, the conditions played more and more into the hands of the super-fit Brits as the sea state increased and the breeze filled with the incumbent rain clouds rolling across the racecourse. An early casualty was the luckless Paul Cayard who suffered a broken mast on the first quarter of the run, bringing his stick tumbling to the deck and ripping his mainsail. It was not the start the American Olympic representative was looking for! However up front, the race was hotting up with Percy and Loof turning the course into a private match race whilst the Irish contingent of Mark Mansfield/Killian Collins and Maxwell Treacy/Anthony Shanks formed a chasing and closing pack behind. Power and pace were the order of the day as Percy closed down the gauge on the second beat throwing successive lee-bow tacks on the Swedes but never quite managing to cross clear ahead. At the final top mark, it was Loof again from Percy who powered down to the spreader mark and then opted to sail a deep run to the final leeward mark under the dramatic lee of the Gaeta old town cliff-top rocks. With the leeward marks split, Percy opted for the nearer starboard side buoy and rounded before Loof who had gone to port. It was a critical decision as Percy piled on the pressure and stormed into a lead that he was never looking like relinquishing. With the breeze now up to 26 knots with gusts of 28 knots, it was all Percy/Mitchell whilst Loof went to pieces, failing to cover the ultra quick Mark Mansfield who picked up some

Thursday Report - Star Olympic Trials - by Susan Bjorn Ruhne
Coconut Grove, Fla. (March 25, 2004) %u2013 With both Star sailors and organizers anxious to resume racing after yesterday%u2019s layday, the Race Committee sent an observer out on blustery Biscayne Bay to take wind readings after early-morning reports came in at 15-22 knots. Armed with the information that the observer never recorded anything in excess of 18 knots, the fleet competing in the 2004 US Olympic Team Trials-Sailing headed out to the course where half an hour before the noon start, winds ranged from 13-18 knots. Under conditions acknowledged as %u201cexcellent for Star sailing,%u201d the course was set for W-2 (windward-leeward twice around). However, by noon the winds had increased to 18-21, and by the time the lead boats had completed the first two legs, winds had increased from 22-25 knots %u2013 with gusts as high as 32 %u2013 resulting in a decision not to run additional races for the day, once the race in progress was completed. With their win of the only race sailed today, George Szabo (San Diego, Calif.) and Mark Strube (West Palm Beach, Fla.) have improved another position in the overall scoring. They have been steadily improving their placement over the course of the series, and today%u2019s win, their second thus far in eight races, puts them 12 points behind series leaders Paul Cayard (Kentfield, Calif.) and Phil Trinter (Lorain, Ohio). Cayard and Trinter finished fourth today and now stand first overall with 14 points. www.ussailing.org/olympics

420 Midwinter's report - by Joey Harria
420 Midwinter%u2019s Feb 14-16, 2004 By Joey Harris The 420 midwinter%u2019s was held February 14-16 at the US Sailing Center in Jensen Beach, Florida. The event would select the American Male Double-Handed team for the 2004 Youth World%u2019s. Sailing in the event from St. Francis Yacht Club was Rob Parrish with crew Mike Kushner and Chris Williams with crew Mike Bolin. Rob and Mike arrived early on Thursday afternoon taking a strategic day off School, which allowed them to rig, tune and practice the day before the event started. This event boasted 75 sailors on its starting line from all over the country and Canada. On Saturday, the first day of the event, saw Northeast winds from 12-18 knots dropping to 10-12 knots in the afternoon. The left side of the course tended to pay off in the shifty and puffy conditions for most of the day. This unfortunately was not the case in the last race of the day, where after holding a 6th most of the race Chris and Mike were caught on the outside of a shift which cost them 14 boats. Rob and Mike faired a little better finishing in the 20%u2019s for most of the day. Sunday gave our sailors a taste of east coast sailing as the first race was scheduled for 9:30am. Launching around 8:30am our sailors headed out in 10 to 15 knots of Southwest winds, which become a dying breeze in the late afternoon. Working up the middle of the course was the lesson for today as the shifts were huge, and changing gears was the name of the game. Both our teams had a tough day trying to staying in phase. The top finish of the day went to Rob & Mike with 20th place in one of the four races of the day. Monday was a bit of a let down as the breeze was now out of the North and a light 8-10 knots. The breeze was only sufficient for one race, which ended up being shortened by the Race Committee due to the dying breeze. The RC abandoned racing at 1:00pm; with racing over we headed to the airport. This was the last of the major 420 regattas until CISA and Youth Champs, which both of our teams hope to participate in later this year. Molly Carapiet's Miami OCR Report - by Molly Carapiet
MIAMI OCR- Molly Carapiet Whitney Besse and I took a week away from work and school to go to some warm weather and sail in Miami Olympic Class Regatta, January 26th-30th. Since this event was after the 2004 Olympic Trials for the 470 class, there were only 11 boats, many of which were younger teams. We arrived in Miami three days early to prepare for the event. Unfortunately we did not get much sailing in due to lack of wind. Luckily, when the racing started we had great breeze. The first day of racing had winds between 10 and 15 knots, but after a squall came through we had to end racing for the day. The second day of racing there was 15-20 knots of wind and a little chop. This was the most wind we had ever sailed a 470 in (I miss sailing city front), but we managed pretty well. We rounded every windward mark in the top three, but was then passed by a couple boats on the downwind legs. We even rounded a windward mark in first, but soon after capsized on the reach due to the heavy wind conditions. We worked with Skip Whyte, the US Sailing Team coach, in order to improve our downwind technique and by the end of the event we were no longer losing boats on the downwind legs. The third day of racing had very light and shifty winds with lots of chop. We once again had good upwind speed and made some good decisions in the shifty conditions, but were still losing boats on the downwind legs. We made some large strides on our downwind speed and tactics, but we still have a lot to learn. We ended up finishing the regatta as the 2nd women%u2019s team, 4th including the men%u2019s teams and we were the top American women. Whitney and I had a lot of fun sailing together, even when we flipped and went from first to last.

Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta 2003 - by Brooks Reed
On the evening of Christmas Day, my crew, Matt Noble, and I flew out to Miami, Florida for the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta sponsored by U.S. Sailing and hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club. We would be competing in the 29er class for the Junior US Open Skiff Championship. We arrived at around 6 in the morning, just in time for a quick nap at our hotel (a poor substitute for a night’s sleep), before we went over to the U.S. Sailing center, where the regatta would be run. We unloaded our boat, which had been driven cross-country along with two other 29ers and a 470 since the charter company had run out of boats. As the regatta went on, we became increasingly glad that we had our own boat, because it turned out to be better maintained. After rigging the boat, Matt and I went out for a quick two-hour practice sail along with a couple other 29ers and a coach from CISA, Dalton Bergen. We were able to get some tips and fine-tune our technique, as well as get used to the short chop and 10-15 knot winds on Biscayne Bay. We felt like we had good speed and that with enough rest, we could have a good chance against the other boats. The racing at the Orange Bowl was excellent. Even though there were only seven 29ers (because of the charter problems), almost all of the boats had excellent speed in certain conditions, and the racing was very close. Biscayne Bay proved to be an excellent venue, with winds normally 10-15 knots and occasional puffs. The cloudy skies meant that it stayed windy, but that it was not quite as warm as we had expected it to be on the water! In addition, the 100-something 420s sharing the course made the tactics very interesting, as the long wall of boats sailing downwind effectively cut the course in two. Clear air and connecting the puffs were very important. Matt and I had a very good regatta, and ended up winning by one point! Our training paid off and our experience practicing in the windy conditions on San Francisco Bay meant we were able to take full advantage of the moderate to strong winds. All of the boats suffered their share of breakdowns, ours being a broken mainsheet ratchet block and a broken vang. The ratchet block meant Matt had to work very hard, since there is no mainsheet cleat. Matt did a great job and we ended up winning both that race, and the race where we had to jury rig our vang. Overall, our scoreline read 2-1-1-2-1-3-3-3-3-(OCS)-1-4. Going in to the last race (the only race on the final day), we were tied with a very fast team from Bermuda. The regatta came down to the last race, and with superior speed and a better start we simply covered them all the way to the finish to take the win. Matt and I had a great time at the regatta, the conditions were fun, and we really gained some good experience racing against some of the top 29er teams in the country (plus the team from Bermuda and a team from Denmark). We were able to perfect many of our techniques and now have th

Orange Bowl 2003 - by Jamie Haines
The Orange Bowl Regatta, one of the largest junior regattas in the country, is held December 26th to the 30th, at the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami, Florida. St. Francis sent 5 sailors in the 420 fleet: Rob Parrish, Mike Kushner, Josh Leighton, Chris Williams, and Mike Bolin, as well as Brooks Reed and Matt Noble in the 29er fleet. This year the Orange Bowl had the largest 420 fleet in the history of the event, with over 100 boats sailing the Biscayne Bay. The 29er fleet, while small, was still quite competitive. The first day saw winds from 15-18 knots dying to 10-12 knots later in the day. With wind out of the northeast there were continuous left shifts, and those who made it to the favored side of the course got paid back big for their efforts. Interestingly, the fleet still split hard at the leeward gate allowing Rob and Mike to make some incredible gains of 30-50 boats at times! The 29er team of Brooks and Matt had a great day, finishing with 2 bullets and second. Day 2 was more of the same with 15 knots in the morning dropping to 12 knots in the afternoon. Chris and Mike had a tough first two days and needed to readjust their rig several times to get going again. Josh and crew Spencer Johnson from SFYC, sailed fantastically for their first big 420 regatta, finishing in the teens for most of the day. Brooks and Matt managed to stay at the top of the 29er fleet with an impressive 2, 1, 3, 3 finishes for the day. On the third day there was a steady breeze out of the south. Although Rob and Mike were out of phase for the first beat, they managed to pass 30+ boats with ease, continuing to be one of the most consistent finishers in the fleet. Josh and Spencer picked up what is sure to be just one of many Bullets in their 420 sailing experience. Brooks and Matt took a bullet in the last race to add to the two thirds and OCS from the morning. Only one race was sailed on the final day, due to light winds. All our teams sailed hard for the entire regatta and had a great time. In the 420 fleet, Rob & Mike sailed consistently to take a solid 7th overall, Josh & Spencer finished up in 14th place, and Chris and Mike 71st place. Brooks and Matt held onto 1st place in the 29er fleet. CONGRATULATIONS to all of our junior sailors for a job well done! Local HS Sailing Team wins Rose Bowl Regatta - by Susan Bjorn Ruhne
Marin Catholic's sailing team won the Rose Bowl Regatta at ABYC in Long Beach this last weekend. Among 47 high school teams from throughout California, Marin Catholic High of Kentfield scored a major upset in winning the Gold fleet, while Loyola of Los Angeles won the Silver fleet. Marin Catholic Coach Dan Malpas said, "It's the first time a Northern California team has done this well ever." Marin Catholic's team, which draws North Bay support from the San Francisco Yacht Club, was composed of Cameron McCloskey and his sister Michaela alternating with Delaney Lynch on the A boat and Morgan Gutenkunst and Becky Mabardy on the B boat. All are juniors or seniors. Marin Catholic won both the A and B groups to finish a whopping 54 points ahead of Newport Harbor, which retained its lead in the 2003-04 Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association standings after three of five events by one point over the Northern California team. Coronado was three points behind Newport Harbor. A younger Marin Catholic "JV" team, which has Paul Cayard's son Daniel as a crew member, placed seventh. Laser sailor Mark Mendelblatt (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Europe sailor Meg Gaillard (Jamestown, R.I./Pelham, N.Y.) are Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively. Bestowed annually, the USOC Athlete of the Year awards are based on outstanding performances in competition. Team of the Year Hannah Swett (Jamestown, R.I./New York, N.Y.), Joan Touchette (Newport, R.I.) and Melissa Purdy (Tiburon, Calif.) were recognized for their performance in the Yngling the class that makes its Olympic debut in 2004 as the women's keelboat event. Two medal winning performances this summer -- silver at the 2003 Athens Regatta in Greece and gold at the 2003 Yngling World Championship in Spain capped a year that started well when Swett, Touchette and Purdy won the Yngling Olympic Pre-Trials (the practice event for the US Olympic Team Trials).
