January 7-8, 2012 - Rose Bowl Regatta (PCISA 3/5)
St.FYC High School Sailors traveled down to the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach for the 27th Annual Rose Bowl Regatta. The regatta was hosted by the USC Sailing Team and organized by the US Sailing Center Long Beach. This is a college and high school sailing regatta. With 29 college teams from around the country and 59 high school sailing teams from California and Washington, the yacht club was swarming with over 400 sailors. The high school division was divided into two fleets; the gold fleet with 27 teams and the silver fleet with 32 teams. St.FYC High School Sailors accounted for six teams in the Silver Fleet.
Saturday morning sailors were greeted by overcast conditions and light westerly breeze. The sailors worked hard to figure out the tricky conditions due to the light breeze and small sailing venue. “A” division finished the day with five races, while “B” division finished the day with four races.
Highlight’s of Saturday’s racing:
- The Bay Schools Keith Roehl and Gibson Buttfield finished the day with 3rd and 5th place finishes.
- Convent/Stuart Hall sailor Francesca Dana and Sarah Bunney placed 5th in a race in A division. Also Convent Sailors Hannah Baylis and Paloma Palmer started the regatta off with a 2nd place finish in the first race.
- Lycee Francais Sailors Max Hamker and Marguerite Hermand had a great day with a 3rd and 5th place finishes.
- The Waldorf School Sailors Lola Bushnell and Jules Christeson had an amazing first day with top finishes of 5th , 2nd ,7th and 3rd.
- Saturday evening was a highlight for many of the sailors and parents as there was a dinner featuring a forum where all the college teams spoke on behalf of their colleges and their sailing programs.
Sunday morning we awoke to sunny skies and strong “Santa Ana” winds. As soon as racing was to start, the “Santa Ana’s” died and the westerly filled in to a steady 5-7 knots. Between races all the sailors hung out on the beach, studied, met other sailors and played frisbee. The regatta ended with 9 races in each division. StFYC sailors had a tough time with the conditions but there were still some top 10 finishes.
Overall, 25 sailors attended the event. All of whom showed great improvement in the light Southern California conditions. It was a successful event both on and off the water.
Final Results:
The Bay School: 12th Place
The Waldorf School: 14th Place
Convent/Stuart Hall Varsity: 16th Place
Lycee Francais: 24th Place
SF University: 25th Place
Convent /Stuart Hall JV: 26th Place
