In 2011, the St. Francis Sailing Foundation purchased a fleet of J/22s and leased them to the St. Francis Yacht Club to support team racing and match racing, the trending small keelboat disciplines of inter-club competition. The fleet now resides in impressive fashion on our waterfront, allowing us to host great regattas including the annual St. Francis Team Race Invitational, the 2012 US Women’s Match Race Championship, and the 2014 US (Open) Match Race Championship.
Recognizing that the J/22 fleet is an incredible resource for the St. Francis Yacht Club and its wider sailing community, we aim to increase opportunities for the fleet's use.
J/22s are available primarily through StFYC-organized racing, instruction and related practices. “Related practices” on J/22s are (a) built into an event schedule and/or authorized by official race documents, or (b) special training for team members preparing to represent StFYC at an upcoming challenge. All practice sessions must be arranged in advance through the Race Office and have an approved practice plan.
Special arrangements may be made through the Race Office to charter a boat for use in a non-StFYC event. Unfortunately, J/22s are not available for pleasure sailing on windy SF Bay.
Charter fees associated with StFYC-organized events are either incorporated into overall entry fees or, in some cases, kept separate for administrative purposes.
In 2017, we will host three J/22 fleet racing series. In the spirit of friendly competition and learning, each evening of racing will involve three or four short courses raced right off the Clubhouse race deck in the golden light of the day. Your team can commit to a complete series or just a single day of racing. Volunteer coaches provide J/22-specific tips and optional advice on tactical situations or rules questions. Racing is open to all. Skippers must be StFYC members in good standing.
Spring Series: March 15, 22, 29; April 5, 12 and 19
Summer Series: July 5, 12, 19, 26
Fall Series: November 5, 12, 19, 26

Look for opportunities to hone your skills at events such as Team Racing 101 in February and the Women’s Clinic during Stag Cruise weekend in September. The fleet is also used for small keelboat instruction as part of our Junior program. Other beginner intermediate, and advanced level instruction are in the works, featuring guest coaching and volunteer coaching by our own member experts.
Women's Clinic: March 7, 14, 21, 28; April 4, 11, 18
