The Race Department is offering a Safe Powerboat Handling/Safety and Rescue Class for all interested St. Francis Yacht Club members and Race Committee volunteers.  This hands-on course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small-medium size powerboat or improve their existing boathandling skills as well as learn or refine proper techniques for small boat rescues, towing and piloting.  The 18 hour class is split between classroom discussion and on the water practice and is the leading powerboat curriculum in the county.  The class is perfect for anyone who is interested in gaining confidence on the water in a comfortable setting and looking to have a well-rounded understanding of powerboat and safety operations.  Topics will include:

Classroom Session    On-the-Water Sessions
Maneuvering concepts                                     Starting procedures
Registration & capacities   Leaving and returning to a dock
Equipment requirements    Close-quarters maneuvering
Prep & fueling procedures       Person in the water rescue
Aids to Navigation
Planing maneuvers
Engine basics    Approaching a mooring
Towing Techniques    Capsize Recovery 
Grounded Boat Rescue    Towing 

The course will be run on the club’s fleet of powerboats and taught by Race Director Lynn M. Lynch, a US Powerboating Master Instructor Trainer. Students who successfully complete the class will receive a Safe Powerboat Handling Certification along with a Safety and Rescue Certification (attendance at all days is required to be eligible for the certification). The cost per student is $125 and includes a continental breakfast and lunch on Saturday as well as the course materials.  Please register through this event link on the St. Francis website event calendar.  Contact Lynn M. A minimum of 7 students must be enrolled by Friday, January 13 to run the class. There is some important pre-course material so please sign up early.
