For the casual passenger along for a ride, being “suddenly in charge” can be a deer-in-the-headlights experience. With a little on-water experience and discussion, we believe anyone can learn to be suddenly in charge.
On May 21 at 10:00am, join the StFYC Seamanship Committee for “Suddenly in Charge: What to do When the Skipper Goes for a Swim.”
This seminar is ideal for people who do not have the base knowledge to bring a vessel under control, whether sail or power. It is also open to those who captain their own vessel, but want to learn more about training their crew to be safe, should anything happen to them. We want to equip everyone with knowledge that could save a life—possibly, their own.
Topics covered in this two-hour seminar include: stopping, slowing, starting, turning, injury assessment, radio usage, anchoring, pulling anchor, cutting anchor and simple navigational markers. Identifying and working with boat controls to perform basic boating actions can seem intimidating—we want to remove those fears.
This is the second of three seminars in the Seamanship Committee’s 2017 series. We delivered Come on Baby Light My Flare last month, Suddenly In Charge this month, and are planning Man Overboard! Now What? for next month.
