January 31: The Fascinating Return of Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises to the Bay
Bill Keener, Marine Biologist, Golden Gate Cetacean Research, Former Exec. Dir. Marine Mammal Center
The improved health of San Francisco Bay has given three species of marine mammals the chance to thrive in our waters: humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins and harbor porpoises. During the past two summers, an unexpected influx of humpback whales swam through the Golden Gate and began feeding in the Bay. Around the same time, bottlenose dolphins expanded their range from Southern California to become residents along the shores of San Francisco and harbor porpoises returned to the Bay after an absence of 65 years. Here’s your chance to learn from a scientific authority about the lives of great whales, the difference between porpoises and dolphins and the best times and places to see our fascinating new neighbors.
