The Participants: The 2019 San Francisco Bay Match Race Clinegatta is now open to all interested sailors who can put together a team. Women, men, and juniors, we welcome you to sign up for this event if you would like to do a little match racing in J/22’s. The event is now two days long, July 6 and 7, with a Saturday clinic and a Sunday Grade 5 Regatta. Accordingly, the cost of the event has dropped to $300 per team. While there is now no longer a gender requirement for the team skipper, teams must have a minimum of two females on the crew. Teams also should collectively have strong racing backgrounds. Some basic match racing experience is a plus, but lack of experience is not a disqualifier. Invitations will go out to qualified skippers on a first-come, first-serve basis. The application window is now open. Deadline: Saturday, June 22.

The Coaching: High-performance sailor and rising star match racer Allie Blecher will lead the coaching team. She will be assisted by Nicole Breault and members of their respective match racing teams. Topics will include advanced J/22 handling, rules & tactics of match racing, plus adapting strategies to the sailing conditions along the StFYC waterfront. Saturday will consist of on-the-water drills and classroom sessions, while Sunday will be an official race day.

About Allie Blecher and Team BAAM!: Allie was a four-time Collegiate All-American sailing for the College of Charleston before breaking out to compete in various performance racing circles, including the Laser Radial, 49erFX and post-college team racing. Building off some J/70 and Melges racing experience, she made her debut with Team BAAM! (Beka Schiff, Ali Blumenthal, and Meg Six) finishing 4thin the 2017 Bedanne Cup, a stop on the highly competitive WIM Series circuit. Since then, Team BAAM! has made it known they are on the hunt for glory, both nationally and internationally. They were runners-up in the 2018 US Women’s Match Racing Championship, competed in the 2019 Nations Cup Grand Final and just last February clinched another silver in the lion’s den of sailing at the New Zealand Women’s National Championship. If you aren’t convinced on the basis of racing prowess, then Allie also brings a whole slew of coaching to the table. Before recently getting a job in the aerospace industry, she ran the Alamitos Bay YC youth sailing program and she remains a regular guru at annual CISA clinic.
