August 5: Sunscreen, Sailors and COVID-19

Sailors are at high risk for skin cancer due to accumulated solar radiation. Sun protection is paramount and a proven strategy to lower the rate at which new cancers arise. Recently, some sunscreen ingredients have gained attention for their potentially negative impact on the marine environment, especially coral reefs. Studies by the Food and Drug Administration showed that certain sunscreen ingredients are absorbed into the blood, prompting proposals for more sunscreen regulations. Dr. Olasz Harken will provide professional guidance about skin cancer prevention, update sailors about adverse effects of some sunscreens and comment on the dermatological manifestations of COVID-19 and research that some forms of UV light kill the virus.
