Meet Paul Koojoolian, the Club's New General Manager
Mainsheet: When did you first go into the Club industry?
Paul Koojoolian: It was August 1996 and I was out of work and trying to decide what I was going to do with my life. I had some experience as a Controller and I loved golf so I thought if I could get a Controller job at a golf course that would be my ultimate job! Five days later I was hired at Presidio Golf Club as their Controller and here I am, five clubs and 20 years later.
Mainsheet: Tell us a bit about your history at St. Francis Yacht Club.
Paul: I started working here in August 2008 as the Club’s Controller. Sometime in 2012 I was promoted to Chief Financial Officer and on March 1, 2017 was promoted to General Manager/Chief Operating Officer.
Mainsheet: Congratulations on becoming the new General Manager! As you enter this exciting next step, what do you hope to accomplish?
Paul: Thank you very much. I am excited, honored and humbled to have been given the opportunity. I have several goals for 2017 but what I see as two of the most immediate needs are increasing our membership through membership referral and addressing our now vacant Race Director position.
Mainsheet: What do you think makes StFYC special?
Paul: There are so many things that set us apart from other clubs. To me, the top contributors are: our history and tradition, caliber of membership, active race calendar, beautiful clubhouse, awesome venue and unique outstation.
Mainsheet: Tell us about your staff. What can the membership expect from them?
Paul: The staff we have assembled is the best group of professionals I have been fortunate enough to work with in my 20-year club career. Our team is comprised of a mix of youth and experience that work in perfect tandem to create lasting member experiences. Our membership can expect energetic, dedicated team members willing to engage, listen and serve.
Mainsheet: What is your favorite time of year at St. Francis Yacht Club?
Paul: After being promoted to Acting General Manager in mid-November and experiencing the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s I’d have to say the holiday season. It was magical and a total blast!
Mainsheet: Tell us something about yourself that the membership might not know.
Paul: The Koojoolian family has been the proud owner of Kasper’s Hot Dogs in the East Bay since 1929 (almost as long as the Club has been around). The founder, Kasper Koojoolian, was my great uncle and my father, Harold, is still “slingin’ wienies” every single day.
Mainsheet: When you’re not at the Club, what are you doing?
Paul: In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family (Mary, my wife of 12 years and our 11-year-old daughter Kate). Mostly, we go to Kate’s soccer games, basketball games and children’s musical theater performances. I also enjoy golfing, travelling and skiing.
