At this weekend’s Elvstrom-Zellerbach Regatta, 88 entries from eight classes—six dinghy classes, Formula Windsurf and Hydrofoil Kite) took to the waters in front of the St. Francis Yacht Club to compete in one of the area’s most storied events. 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of the Elvstrom Regatta, an event that started in 1975 when over 100 Lasers were on the starting line. The Zellerbach Regatta, equally storied, started in 1962 in memory of Isadore Zellerbach to promote single-handed sailing in Olympic class boats in the U.S.. Over time, the two regattas became one and they now stand as an annual display of fast boats, great sailing and plenty of capsizes.

Over the course of the two-day regatta, Race Committee got in six races for the six dinghy classes—505s, F18 Catamarans, Club 420s, Lasers Standards and Laser Radials—as well as formula boards and foiling kites. The breeze built both days and topped out in the low 20s, providing plenty of wind power for these go-fast fleets.

All fleets saw competitive racing, with standout performances in three fleets, where the top finishers scored only bullets after their single throw-out: Neil Marcellini, Richmond Yacht Club, 29er; Lawson Willard, StFYC, 420; and Jack Barton, SFYC, Laser Radial. Elvstrom Regatta Turns 40

In 1975, Paul Elvstrom was to sailing what Babe Ruth was to baseball. With four Olympic Gold medals and eleven world championships in eight different boats, including Snipe, Soling, Star, Flying Dutchman and Finn, Paul Elvstrom was a 1970s superstar in the world of sailing.

That same year, St. Francis Yacht Club member Don Trask was holding a seminar to promote a new 14-foot high performance sailboat: the Laser. To help build excitement for the seminar, Trask invited Elvstrom, from Denmark, to attend. Elvstrom obliged, but only on the condition he would be able to compete. It would be his first time sailing a Laser. Participation in the seminar was so strong that it was moved to Marina Middle School because the StFYC could not hold the crowd.

On the first day of the regatta, over 100 Lasers were on the starting line. Every fast young sailor from up and down the coast was there, including John Bertran, Jeff Madrigali and Russ Silvestri, all of whom would go on to be Olympians. The starting gun blared. At the pin end of the line, perfectly times, Paul Elvstrom port-tacked the entire fleet. Word passed from boat to boat, “Look at Elvstrom! Look at Elvstrom!”

A port-tack start at the inside buoy at the St. Francis Yacht Club is one of the greatest thrills a sailor can have. Though it was his first time in a Laser, Elvstrom pulled it off with seeming ease.
