From the Commodore: My Favorite Things
“In thinking back on this year, I am reminded of the positive energy and passion for yachting that is shared by our membership. 2017 had so many highlights that exemplify our mission statement.”

A Few of My Favorite Things

In thinking back on this year, I am reminded of the positive energy and passion for yachting shared by our membership. We have so many highlights in 2017 that exemplify our mission statement by demonstrating camaraderie, sportsmanship, tradition and maritime heritage in a premier yachting environment.

Here are some of my favorites:

90th Anniversary + Legends Regatta
The weekend of our birthday celebration, combined with a unique Club Member / Team Captain racing format, honored our core culture and history while treating the members to a gallery of historical artifacts and a clubhouse of mind-boggling décor.

Women’s and Olympic Development Clinics
Leadership comes most favorably from the grass roots. Our full schedule of oversubscribed clinics, both for women’s sailing and high-performance youth sailing, revealed there is a thirst to get out on the water and acquire new skills on the racecourse. And we’re on the pathway to quenching that thirst.

Rolex Big Boat Series
Luck was on our side when perfect racing conditions greeted our race committee volunteers and organizers so they could deliver strong participation, close racing, and fun social events.

Royal Yacht Squadron Weekend Extravaganza
We thank our top-shelf reciprocal club who brainstormed a one-on-one team race regatta that expanded to take on many amusing forms throughout Labor Day Weekend. As the British would say, the proof is in the pudding, and StFYC will go to Cowes to race in 2018!

Hinman Masters and Hinman Trophy
Our members won both of these prestigious regattas this summer, proving the value of practice and perseverance.

Members in the Transpac
At the outset of the year, I put forth the goal of “burnishing our reputation worldwide.” The Transpac is historically a cornerstone event for our members, and their 2017 race results proved we are still leading the game. Shout-out to  Rio100, Comanche, Merlin, Deception and Oaxaca.

Commodore’s Ball
The members wanted a traditional, elegant ball. The committee presented extraordinary design and entertainment that went above and beyond expectations, keeping the party going far beyond the scheduled close.

With that, I wish you and your family Happy Holidays. Please join me at the Annual General Meeting on January 9th followed by the Annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner. With all of these wonderful moments of 2017, this year’s Awards are sure to be particularly memorable.
