One afternoon in December, one of our vendors visited the Club to meet with me. I found her in the Lobby, marveling at the energetic buzz that permeated the Clubhouse. “What’s going on, is there a special event today?” she asked.
I laughed and said, “Nope! Just another day at the St. Francis Yacht Club during the holiday season!”
On December 2nd, the Election Committee counted the ballots for the annual election. Congratulations to Commodore-elect Theresa Brandner, Vice Commodore-elect Paul Heineken, Rear Commodore-elect Ken Glidewell and the three elected Directors: Paul Cayard, Elizabeth Little and Geoff Mulligan. In all, over 1,000 members voted this election—a record turnout. The staff and I look forward to working with the new slate as we welcome in 2018.
The very next day, the holiday season kicked off in grand style with the Children’s Holiday Party. The event coincides with our annual day of giving to the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program. This year, we outdid ourselves by breaking our record both in terms of the number of bikes donated and the dollars given. Under the leadership of Ed and Barbara Kuykendall, the Club donated 240 bikes, thousands of dollars’ worth of toys, and a check for $2,500. This program would not be the success it is without the Kuykendalls—they started this program 15 years ago and it has grown every year. Thank you also to everybody who donated to the cause and who showed up to assemble the bikes!
The Children's Holiday Party was followed by a full roster of holiday festivities: Decorated Boat Parade, Member Holiday Party, Christmas Eve Buffet, Father Son Luncheon and the New Year’s Eve Gala. Kudos go out to the event chairs, the Associate Members who performed, and the staff for making these events memorable.
Speaking of staff, I would like to spotlight the Catering, Food & Beverage and Culinary teams for all of their hard work during this busy month. When everyone is enjoying the season, these folks are working, and it does not go unnoticed. As a thank you to the entire staff, we’re gearing up for another Employee Appreciation Party in mid-January. All employees will be treated to an evening on the Bay aboard the California Hornblower. We will recognize our tenured employees with anniversary pins and announce our Employee of the Year with the “Leadership Award”. It is sure to be a festive celebration and a well-deserved thank-you for all their hard work in 2017.
As we enter 2018 I would like to make you aware of a special event we will be hosting in March: A Networking Event at the 2018 Club Managers of America Association World Conference being held in San Francisco for the first time in nearly 20 years. On Monday, March 5th, we will welcome hundreds of Club Managers from around the country who will converge on the #1 Yacht Club in America to experience everything that is St. Francis Yacht Club. We will be looking for 25-50 member-volunteers to serve as ambassadors, greeting guests and showcasing our signature Yacht Club spirit. If you’re interested, let me know.
