St. Francis members Tom Ehman and Ron Young were honored at the PICYA’s 53rd Annual Awards Dinner at the Encinal Yacht Club on Monday, November 5, 2018.

Tom received the Douglas Boswell Perpetual Yachtsman of the Year Trophy, recognizing his lifetime of efforts in the sport, including covering five decades of distinguished and outstanding service to boating and yachting locally, nationally and internationally. Tom is the fifth person so honored as a St. Francis member, following: James Michaels (1983), Edward Peck (1984), Tom Blackaller, Jr. (1987) and Tom Allen (1991). Three other St. Francis members have also received the honor: Pam Healy (1992), Larry Ellison (2003) and Russ Wallace (2004), as members of San Francisco Yacht Club, Golden Gate Yacht Club and Sausalito Yacht Club respectively.

Ron received The Lloyd Ryland Yachting Historian of the Year Trophy for his three decades of service which have spanned three tours and 14 years as Chairman of the Wednesday Yachting Luncheon between 1991 and 2018. During that time, Ron has produced over 700 WYLs on topics including the history of yachting in America, San Francisco Bay and the America’s Cup; the history of San Francisco Bay and the California Delta; and hundreds of other nautical subjects. Ron is the second recipient from St. Francis Yacht Club following RC Keefe who was awarded the Ryland in 2014.

Founded in 1896 for inter-communications, uniform racing rules and to encourage yachting, The Pacific Inter-Club Yachting Association (PICYA) has grown from the original 5 to 105 Northern California Yacht Clubs and endeavors to serve the entire boating community.

Both trophies will be on display in the Clubhouse for a year.
