Regatta Preview: Alcatel J/70 Worlds
This sportboat is the fastest-growing class in the history of the sport with over 1,100 hulls built since the boat launched in 2011. Now at its third-ever Worlds, the class is anticipating over 85 boats to be on the line.

About the Regatta

When the J/70 first launched, it was met with accolades and excitement from the international sailing community. Sailing World named it Boat of the Year in 2013 and sailors were quick to agree. In five short years, it has become the fastest-growing one-design class in the history of the sport with over 1,100 hulls on the water today.

This year’s Worlds is the third-ever international championship for this class. The first was in Newport, Rhode Island in 2014 with 86 boats. The second, in La Rochelle, France in 2015, had 78 entries. This year at St. Francis Yacht Club, we are predicting 85 boats on the line hailing from 16 countries for a full week of highly competitive and fast racing.

Mobile technology company Alcatel is proud to be the title sponsor of this Worlds. As an innovative company focused on fun and fast technology, Alcatel is a perfect fit for this boat and St. Francis Yacht Club. Alcatel will be gifting all J/70 skippers a complimentary IDOL 4s smartphone equipped with a tracking app through which the regatta will be live-tracked. At the clubhouse, Alcatel will set up a virtual reality station so sailors and spectators can virtually experience life on a J/70. Thanks to Alcatel, this will be a fully integrated spectator experience.
