Instruction and Summer Camps

St. Francis Yacht Club offers year-round youth sailing instruction.


New sailors start with the Learn to Sail program and grow into Learn to Race. Our youngest sailors (8-11) sail in Optis and RS Teras and around age 12, they switch into the C420. All boats are excellent training vessels, provided and maintained by the Club.

In the summer, StFYC offers multiple weeklong sailing camps, including overnight camps at Tinsley Island and day camps at the San Francisco clubhouse. All camps and clinics are open to members and non-members.  


Weekend

  • Learn to Sail

    • Learn to Sail: Tera - $400/members; $475/non-members

      *This course is designed for beginners and for sailors looking to build confidence and learn the fundamentals of double handed sailing.  This is a great course for middle school sailors and for sailors wanted to learn to sail for their high school sailing teams. This course should likely be taken several times before sailor is ready to advance to “Learn to Race”

      The St. Francis Yacht Club's Intermediate 420 program features the most versatile and popular double-handed junior boat on the continent. 420s are sturdy and safe racing dinghies, just under 14 feet long and ideal for learning double-handed sailing. This class is open to intermediate level sailors between the ages of 13-18. Sailors will learn how to trapeze and fly a spinnaker and this course will elevate skills and understanding of teamwork, boat setup and tuning. Class emphasis is on building the sailor’s skill sets and confidence regarding trapeze work, spinnaker use and race strategy. This class is a great option for those who are interested in joining our 420 Race Team in the future. Sailors must be in 8th grade or older to participate.

    • J/22 Sailing - $150 members; $175 non-members

      The J-22 is a four-person keelboat.  You will be paired up with other sailors of your ability level and we will train each boat to reach their potential. This is a great course for sailors who would like to race on larger keelboats over the summer.  Learn the basics of sailing a keelboat, including skippering, trimming, mast position and being the bow person. Sailors must be in 7th grade or older to participate and all ability levels are welcome. Some of the boats will have a coach on board.

  • Tera Race Week

    • Tera Race Week - $100 members; $125 non-members

      This class is open to sailors between the ages of 12-18 years old. We will be sailing a fleet of RS Teras in daily races to determine the winner of the week. Come down and race your friends as we even the playing field by putting all sailors in Teras. Having everyone in small dinghies will improve your tactical strategy. This class is open to 20 participants and we will alternate sailors and boats after every race. A great course for skippers who want to improve their tactical strategy, crews who want to show their skippers that they know best, crews looking to get practice driving and anyone ready for some friendly competition.


Intermediate/Advanced Junior Sailing Programs

      This class is open to intermediate/advanced level sailor between the ages of 13-18 years of age.  Sailors will learn how to trapeze and fly a spinnaker in this course.  This course will elevate sailor’s skills and understanding of teamwork, boat setup and tuning. If more sailors sign up than spots available, the coaching staff will pick the sailors.  We need to make sure that we have enough skippers who are able to drive the boats.  The goal of this class is to introduce sailors to the C420 with the hope that during the summer they will be able to race the boats during the Summer BAYS Series.


Summer Sailing Camps

  • Tinsley Island
    • This once-in-a-lifetime sleepaway sailing camp experience is designed for beginner and intermediate sailors. Sailors will spend the week learning to sail Optis, RS Teras, Bytes, Lasers and Windsurfers. Other camp activities and games will include kayaking, paddle boarding, land games and pool time.

      Tinsley Island camp runs Monday through Friday. Girls and boys sleep in separate bunkhouse rooms with instructor supervision. Camps enjoy three gourmet meals per day, prepared by the camp chef.

      Summer Camp Cancellation Policy
      Notice of cancellation must be made in writing at least six (6) weeks prior to the start of the session to receive a full refund (minus the $100 nonrefundable registration fee).  There will be no refunds within six (6) weeks of the start of a session.

  • City Front

    • Each San Francisco clubhouse camp session is designed for beginner and intermediate sailors between the ages of 8 and 16 from 9am to 4pm. Classes are taught on RS Teras, Optis and Club 420s. Beginning classes cover topics including rigging, points of sail, capsizing, tacking, gybing and safety. Intermediate classes move on to topics such as sail trim, weight placement, tactics, starting and the Racing Rules of Sailing.
