Be Careful What You Wish For - The Great Storm of 1862

Jonathan Stock, Ph,D., Director, Innovation Center, US Geological Survey

Drought-stricken Californians would be shocked by our region’s history of flooding from vast Pacific storms. In winter and spring, these storms originate as tropical cyclones that spin Atmospheric Rivers of moisture toward the coast. When and where they collide, vast amounts of rain cause floods and landslides. Hillslopes can collapse, washing away roads, homes and businesses in minutes. Hear about the effects of the largest historic storm of 1861-1862. Flooding from that storm was extreme by modern comparison. Dramatic as it was, that storm was likely smaller than those that walloped our state during pre-historic times!
