Solar-powered, Unmanned and Cheaper than Ships—How Saildrones Are Collecting Climate Data
Sebastien Halleux, Chief Operating Officer, Saildrone

Saildrone provides high resolution ocean data collected by a fleet of wind and solar powered unmanned autonomous, surface vessels (UASVs). Saildrones collect data cheaper and more quickly than conventional technologies and are capable of long-range autonomous wind-powered missions (up to 12 months) to any ocean location, all while streaming real-time data to shore via satellite. The company aims to disrupt weather and climate modeling and environmental monitoring. Saildrone was founded in 2011 by Richard Jenkins, who broke the wind-powered world speed record in 2009 (126.2 mph) before applying his wing technology to unmanned sailboats.
