Open Access Oceans—Bringing Marine Environments to Everyone
Erika Woolsey, PhD Marine Biology

Bay Area native Erika Woolsey has been researching marine ecosystems for over a decade, with a special interest in the effects of warming seas on coral reefs. She studied biology and art history at Duke, received her Masters of Applied Science from the University of Sydney and conducted her PhD research on the Great Barrier Reef with James Cook University. As Director of Hydrous, a non-profit that seeks to connect people to ocean environments, she is using her research background to translate scientific discovery into public understanding, using frontier technologies such as virtual reality and 3D printing. Believing that education and technology can change the world, she is using both to demonstrate why marine environments are worth protecting.
