Learn to Foil

Open to sailors of all levels, ages 12-18. Sailors who want to learn how to hydrofoil (hover above the water on a board), or simply continue improving their skill. This is the pathway to the Beginner Wingfoiling Class.

You will take turns learning how to balance on the board and getting up on the hydrofoil. Sailors have lots of fun learning to keep the board even over the foil, hovering above the water, controlling the foil and avoiding “porpoise-ing”. Sailors say it's really hard, but they enjoy every minute! Sailors are welcome to take this class many times and participants will use StFYC's fleet of Cabrinha boards and foils.

Sailors must wear closed-toe shoes, a lifejacket, a wetsuit and a helmet. StFYC has a limited collection to be loaned out on a first come, first serve, basis. Sailors must be at class by 4:00pm.

Beginning Wingfoil

Prerequisite: Learn to Foil or be able to foil (efoil, be towed behind a boat, windsurf foil, surf foil, or kitefoil)

This course will teach young sailors how to fly the wing and how to get up on the foil with the power of the wing. On the first day of the class sailors will do land drills to learn how to fly the wing and then go on a windsurfing board to learn how to use the wing on the water and control the board. Once the class feels comfortable in the more stable environment, the sailors will start adding their foiling skills (from a previous class or experience) with their wing flying abilities.

The goal of this class is to get sailors to be able to ride the foil for an extended amount of time. This course should be taken multiple times. It takes a lot of practice to be able to pop the board up on the foil. It takes most people several days to be able to get the board foiling and staying on the foil for an extended period.

Participants in the class will be able to use the StFYC's fleet of Cabrinha boards, wings and foils.
