Come on Baby, Light my Flare: How to Evaluate, Use and Store your Flares and Emergency Signals

First of three StFYC Seamanship Series
April 15, 10:00am to 12:00pm

*Now free for all participants*

Have you ever fired a flare? Do you know how to light a hand flare without burning yourself? Ever fired off a parachute flare or smoke canister? Do you know where they are on your boat? Have they passed their expiration date? The first time to use your flares is not when you need them. To help you gain skills and confidence to use these emergency signals, this seminar will teach you how to properly store, use and deploy flares. Learn the difference between Inland and SOLAS rated emergency signaling equipment, and then practice using expired flares, smoke canisters and parachute flares. (As a bonus, the member who brings in the oldest unused flare will win a dinner for two! Really—why do we keep these things so long?)

Meet the Instructor: Christopher Hanson

Captain Hanson is a 100-Ton Master who has cruised powerboats through the San Juan Islands, Mexico and San Francisco Bay. He is a "sometimes coastal racer and regular gin drinker" who is enthusiastic about bringing seamanship education to the membership of St. Francis Yacht Club.
