July 22: Gashouse Cove in the Marina District: Why hasn't it been fixed?

Dan Clarke, Longtime (former) Marina District Resident, Activist and Creator of MGPdata.com

The SF Marina West Harbor was renovated ten years ago, but Gashouse Cove (SF Marina East Harbor) has not been dredged for decades. The harbor floor is contaminated with poisonous byproducts of Manufactured Gas Plants, which operated along San Francisco’s northern waterfront from 1883 until 1906. Large deposits of these hazardous compounds can still be seen bubbling up in San Francisco Bay during some low tides. Dan will recount the colorful story behind the gas plants and the unfortunate legacy left behind as the Marina developed from a shallow cove into a residential and recreational gem.
