The History and Maritime Heritage of Belvedere and Tiburon
Dave Gotz, Town of Tiburon Historian and Archivist; Belvedere-Tiburon Landmarks Society
The Tiburon Peninsula, which includes the Town of Tiburon and the City of Belvedere, is the largest part of the Rancho Corte de Madera del Presidio. This ranch, which originally cut wood for the Presidio, was granted by the Mexican government to John Thomas Reed in 1834. Initially an agrarian society of cattle ranches and then dairy farms, it evolved into a maritime center in the North Bay with the advent of a railroad and ferry terminus in Tiburon in 1884, three yacht clubs, harbors, man-made lagoons, scenic walks and luxury homes. We will explore the many industries and pastimes that evolved in the following century with rare and historic photos from the Landmarks Society’s collection.
